If you are alumni of foster care beginning (or continuing) your college education, congratulations! You earned this opportunity and it’s important to feel prepared.  In this new and exciting chapter of your life one of your most important success factors will be building your network of support.

Desaray_IspeakEDUWithin universities and community colleges there are a variety of programs and services tailored to help you succeed in academics, finances, and career development. My advice is to find those programs and services on campus NOW and grow and maintain your network of support(s); they can serve as a gateway for future educational opportunities.

Although social capital may sound like a financial or legal term, it is defined as the network of individuals you are connected to. Your social capital may include friends, mentors, and family members that are there to help you through life. It is helpful to have a diverse network of people that you can turn to. For example, you may have a friend you can list as a job reference and another friend or family member you can turn to in an emergency situation.

It is important to build and save social capital just like money which means investing time into developing and maintaining relationships with individuals you are connected to. However, unlike money, you can have a personal relationship with your social capital!

I Speak Change.

ISpeakChange

“My first month in the care of DCS was one of my most uncertain. New to my group home and only having met my case manager once, I had no idea I had access to legal supports when I needed help! If I had my own nifty ‘Know Your Rights’ Adrian_Megaphoneposter, I could have been aware I had rights as a youth in foster care and an attorney to defend them. For the first time since my case opened, I now meet with my attorney and Guardian Ad Litem (GAL) regularly. I’m legally able to empower myself and affect my case. If you’re still unsure about your rights as a young person in care, talk to your DCS Specialist and check out our ‘Know Your Rights‘ infographic from our PDF Library!“

I want others to succeed after aging out of foster care.”

From Brittany’s experiences, she developed a passion to help others going through similar trials and tribulations of being in foster care. As a member of the Fostering Advocates Arizona (FAAZ) Young Adult Leadership Board, Brittany takes initiative to be involved in her community, particularly advocating for successful transitions of young adults aging out of foster care. Recently she attended MY FEST, as a FAAZ representative, to speak with foster youth and increase awareness of social capital, housing, and the importance of creating a support system for young adults in care.

Patienceblog“My passion is to take my knowledge of the things I know and have experienced to bring awareness and change with advocating, music, and poetry.”

Patience is never at a loss for words, as she uses her passion for writing, poetry, and the arts to shed light on the barriers facing Arizona foster youth. Patience is an advocate of helping other foster youth find their voice and to provide the tools and resources to advocate for themselves, as well as know their rights, so they too can thrive as an independent and successful adult.
