For the month of May, to show our support for Foster Care Month, we will be highlighting young adults and sharing their experiences as an advocate for foster youth. Read Brittany’s story below:

I want others to succeed after aging out of foster care.”

From Brittany’s experiences, she developed a passion to help others going through similar trials and tribulations of being in foster care. As a member of the Fostering Advocates Arizona (FAAZ) Young Adult Leadership Board, Brittany takes initiative to be involved in her community, particularly advocating for successful transitions of young adults aging out of foster care. Recently she attended MY FEST, as a FAAZ representative, to speak with foster youth and increase awareness of social capital, housing, and the importance of creating a support system for young adults in care.

Patience is never at a loss for words, as she uses her passion for writing, poetry, and the arts to shed light on the barriers facing Arizona foster youth. Patience is an advocate of helping other foster youth find their voice and to provide the tools and resources to advocate for themselves, as well as know their rights, so they too can thrive as an independent and successful adult.

Desaray is at the forefront when it comes to advocating for improved outcomes for foster youth in Arizona. Currently pursuing her Masters Degree in Social Work at Arizona State University, Desaray takes an active role in challenging and encouraging the state of Arizona to create policies and laws that encourage healthy outcomes for young adults in care. She is not shy when it comes to representing her fellow foster care alumni, whether she’s quoted in the ASU News or speaking at the Arizona State Capitol about the importance of post-secondary education and support for foster youth.

For the month of May, to show our support for Foster Care Month, we will be highlighting young adults and sharing their experiences as an advocate for foster youth. Read Adrian’s story below:

” I want to bring attention to the diverse ways that foster youth may live in their own communities.”

Adrian has big aspirations to change the way in which the needs of foster care youth are recognized. Those aspirations are followed by immense effort and participation in his community to advocate for safe self-expression for foster youth. Adrian makes an active effort to be culturally competent, as he engages with foster youth to hear their voice and understand their needs and priorities. Adrian enjoys presenting to foster care youth and educating them on resources and services available to young adults in foster care, such as the Independent Living Program, Transitional Independent Living Program, and the Education Training Voucher.

“I want to help improve systems of care for current and future members.”

Ben is passionate about improving the lives of the 17,000 children and youth in Arizona foster care.  From his personal experience in a group home setting, as well as independent living, Ben feels that he can shed a personal light on the resources and services impacting young adults in care. As an IT specialist for Jewish Family & Children Services, Ben plans to continue pursuing his educational goals in 2015. He hopes that other foster alumni will utilize resources such as the Education Training Voucher and the Arizona Tuition Waiver to aspire and obtain their educational goals as well.
